Essay Purpose:
- The purpose of this informative essay is to more fully understand one topic under the broad categories of Depression. In this essay, you are teaching an audience of your peers more information about your topic. You are not arguing for or against anything, you are presenting information that would better help your peers to understand your topic. Informative essays present information evenhandedly. They do not include your opinion on the topic.
Essay Sections:
- Abstract– Include a 250 word or less summary of your essay. At the end of your abstract, include a list of keywords used in your essay.
- Introduction — Write a strong “hook” to lure your reader into wanting to learn more about your topic. It could be a story, a quote, or something else to interest your reader.
- Include some background information
- Include your thesis statement (this should be narrowly focused on one aspect of the broader topic).
- Provide some context. This could include statistics, definitions of key terms, description about your topic.
- Research — Explain your topic by comparing, classifying, analyzing causes, or effects, and so on.
- Conclusion — Why is your topic important? Leave your reader with one key thought from your essay and why this thought matters.

Essay: 100
Draft = 5 points Research = 20 points
Title page = 4 points Conclusion = 10 points
Abstract = 7 points References = 10 points
Introduction = 7 points In-text citations = 10 points
Thesis = 10 points grammar/punctuation/mechanics/formatting = 10 points
Context = 7 points
