Step 1 Write Summary:
Write the main ideas of the article in your own words. Convey the authors’ purpose and all key concepts.
Thoroughly read the article (two or three times) – take notes as you read.
Research and report the credentials of the author(s) and the journal (European Food and Feed Law Review), and the meaning of unfamiliar terminology and concepts. Important Note: this article was published in a Law Review journal – this is important when thinking about the audience for this article – think back on the role-playing assignment. The author’s credentials are on the lower right corner of the first page of the article.
Step 3 – Write Analysis:
Analysis: Very briefly describe who the authors are and the audience they are trying to persuade and inform with this article. Evaluate the structure of the text and how well the article is written to persuade that audience – consider the argument techniques the authors used. Evaluate the overall effectiveness of the article.
Step 4 – Write Response:
Explain your thoughts about this article. Evaluate what you think on the issue the authors raised – In the absence of scientific evidence, should Traditional Use data be used to inform the regulation of botanical supplements? – and relate it to personal experiences.
What questions come to mind as you analyze the article? Write one or two questions for discussion. The discussion question(s) might (1) seek clarification regarding a concept, (2) connect this reading to a previous one, and/or (3) raise important issues for supplement users or their healthcare providers.
