Students are required to complete a proposal for a research project on a selected topic. This means that students will design and propose an original research project but will not carry out the actual empirical research. The proposal should include sections on the research question, a review of the scholarly literature, a hypothesis, a summary of methods to be used, and a discussion of the significance of the topic. Students learn to do this through a series of assignments during the semester. The final paper should be about 8-10 typed pages (plus tables and references) and should follow the ASA format. The final paper is due during final exam week. The paper is graded on quality/clarity of ideas, application of learned research skills, formatting and writing style, and overall professional quality of the paper.”

Writing the Literature Review
Write a review of the literature on your topic.
What’s in the literature review? The literature review follows directly from your research question. It summarizes the ways others have tried to answer the question. The literature review should highlight important characteristics and trends in the research. Here are some of the issues to address in the literature review: How do researchers define the topic? Which techniques, data, and approaches do they use to study the phenomenon? Which theories do they offer to explain the phenomenon? What results do they find? Do scholars tend to agree or disagree?
How to organize the literature review? There is no single way to organize the literature review, but rather it should be organized according to the themes you find in the literature. Do not write a serial description of sources: Follow these steps in preparation for writing:
• Make an outline before you start writing – see info in readings and on BB.
• Look at examples of literature reviews, in BB, in your scholarly articles, and in Writer’s Manual.
