1. How does the picture of profound mental illness presented by Kay Jamison differ from its stereotypical representation in popular literature and in films? Moreover, how do media depictions of mental illness influence people with mental illnesses? Use research to support your position.
2. Why does Jamison resist taking the one drug, lithium, that can help her and what finally causes her to change her mind? Overall, what does the research tell us about the benefits and drawbacks of medication for bipolar disorder? What factors typically influence patient’s decisions to take or not to take medication?
3. “The long and important years of childhood and early adolescents… were to be an extremely powerful amulet, a potent and positive countervailing force against future unhappiness” [p. 15]. What aspects of Jamison’s early life and upbringing helped to provide her with emotional support on which to draw years later? Also, in general, what does the research say about resilience factors for individuals with bipolar disorder or other mental illnesses? What factors promote resilience? Did any of those factors apply to Kay? What can we, as a society, do to promote resilience in individuals with mental illness”
4. “Depression, somehow, is much more in line with society’s notions of what women are all about… Manic states, on the other hand, seem to be more the provenance of men” [p. 122]. In what ways might Kay’s gender have influenced her diagnosis, her treatment, and her ability to live with her mental illness? Moreover, according to the research, what stereotypes exist about women that might related to mental illness (e.g., women are more “emotional.”)? How do these stereotypes influence women with and without mental illnesses, and what can we, as a society, due to address these issues?
