1. 82% of SCI injuries happen to males and more than 50% occur between the ages of 16 and 30 (One paragraph)

a. Does that surprise you?

b. Why do you think this is?

In order of most common to least common: SCI are caused by vehicular accidents (car, truck, motorcycle, bicycles), violence (fights), falls, sports-related accidents, and other.

First, let’s start by stating a fact -a SCI could happen to anyone – you, me, your friend, your family member.  No one plans on having a SCI however if they do, it is life-changing.  I remember working at a physical rehabilitation hospital in Chicago on the SCI unit.  These were some of my first patients as a recreational therapist.  One man (late 40s) came in with a SCI which resulted in quadriplegia.  He was on a vacation to Hawaii with his family celebrating his 20th wedding anniversary.  He was swimming in the ocean and a wave hit him and broke his neck.  Another man (mid 20s) came in with a SCI which resulted in quadriplegia after a motorcycle accident.  He just wasn’t any motorcycle driver, he was a professional.  He had the top of the line bike, gear, helmet, and spinal jacket.  The only thing he didn’t purchase was the neck protection which he knew was a risk but he thought, “what was the chance?” …that is exactly where he broke his neck after a car didn’t stop at a stop sign and hit him.  Finally, one of my good friends has been a paraplegic since she was 16 (now she is 50) when she got in a car accident with friends.  She was sitting in the back seat and not wearing a seat belt.  She was the only one injured.

Now, not all the physical disabilities in this chapter are the result of accidents but I thought I’d share with you some of the reasons that result in SCIs because it is important to remember that all of these people had active lives prior to their injury.  They all had interests and hobbies that they pursued to bring their lives purpose and happiness.  So, after reading this chapter and viewing some of the videos…

2. How do we, as leisure professionals, support individuals who are paraplegic or quadriplegic? (One paragraph)

They have reduced mobility so they can’t successfully participate in various recreational activities, right?

3.  Tell me what you learned that contradicts that statement.(One paragraph)

As you learn about physical disabilities

4. How has this changed your perception of the endless possibilities for those who have physical disabilities?  (One paragraph)
