Formative Assessment 3 is in the form of an essay. You are be required to write an essay, first to describe how/in what ways, at least three selected art forms from those studied in Module 4, artistically represent and promote public service. The three art forms can be from the same or different categories. Secondly, to explain the potential social impact of each of the art forms.
The utilitarian arts and symbolism, as they relate to the public sector and public service professionalism.
By the time the essay is due we would have reviewed the utilitarian arts and symbolism, as they relate to the public sector and public service professionalism. Three texts guided us through the review process by providing specific criteria from which we can select to use as a lens through which to examine these art forms in the context of public service.
Public Architecture as a Political and Social Anchor (Goodsell 1997)
Social Meaning of Public Architecture (Armstrong et al, 1998)
Perpetuating a Positive Image of Public Administration (Warner, 2007)
Specifications for the Essay
Length:
Two and a half to three pages, double spaced, 12 point font, 1- inch margins. Include images discussed in an appendix at the end of the essay.
Format & Content:
Introduction – explain what the essay is about. E.g. This essay includes a description of the artistic representation of public service recognized in – Name of the art form, location/artist/year. You should also mention why you selected it. Then, explain which ‘lenses’ are being used to examine the art form for its relevance to public service, and why. E.g. name of the author who provided the lenses and state what are the author’s claims about the utility of the lenses. You should list these lenses in the order that you will proceed to discuss them in the body of the essay and devote at least one paragraph to applying each toward describing the selected art form/s. (2%)
Main body, say you selected from Ruskin’s Lamps, or from Armstrong et al’s reinterpretation of them in the text Social meanings of public architecture: a Victorian Elucidation, you should devote a separate paragraph for discussing each ‘lamp’ in terms of how it serves you in seeing/understanding the art form in the context of public service. This will require time to look at the art form, to look away from it, and to consider what you perceive. No need to apply all of the lamps, you can select which are most appropriate to your art form/s. (9%)
Conclusion, summarizes what you have written. You can make this interesting by briefly comparing the effectiveness of the ‘lamps’ /lenses/criteria, identifying one that you consider being most forceful as a lens for recognizing how public service was presented/perceived/promoted in the art form. Public Management & Administration Illustrated
Public Management & Administration Illustrated (Volumes in a Multi-Lingual Collection of Diagrams)
Marc Holzer and Etienne Charbonneau, Editors
Visual support enables insightful ideas to leap over language barriers. These volumes of Public Management and Administration Illustrated are translated into several languages in order to make the ideas contained in these illustrations available to a large public. Diagrams reproduced in these volumes communicate the main ideas in several fields of public administration. Diagrams are organized into six chapters: Systems and Environment of the Public Sector, Developing Human Resources, Adapting Technologies, Building Partnerships, Measuring for Performance, and Improving Public Performance. In order to facilitate translations, text has been kept to a minimum. The diagrams speak for themselves.
