Growing up in a middle-class home in a developed country, I never fully realized how lucky I was until my father and I went to India and stayed in a village. My dad is part of a charity group, and he often goes to faraway places to help people in need. I went with him on one of his trips even though I didn’t know what to expect.
When we got to the town, I was struck by how different my life was from that of the people who lived there. The village was poor, and the mud-and-straw houses were falling apart. There was no power or running water, and the streets were full of trash and wild animals. As we walked through the town, we met a lot of people who didn’t have much, but who was very friendly and happy to see us. Even though they didn’t have much, they smiled at us and offered us food and tea. Their kindness and giving made me feel very small. As we talked to the people in the town, I learned about the many problems they face every day. Many of them had trouble getting things like clean water and medical care. Children had to walk several miles to get to school, and many families couldn’t afford even the most basic types of education. I felt very sad and sorry for what they were going through. Even though they had to deal with a lot of problems, the people were very strong and creative. They had found ways to work with what they had and make the most of it. As a group, they helped each other out and solved their problems by working together. Because of what I saw and did in the village, I understood how lucky I was. I had a good education, good health care, and all the other things I needed to live. I took these things for granted and didn’t realize how lucky I was until now.
At the same time, I learned that happiness and joy don’t always come from having things. Even though the villagers didn’t have much money, they were some of the happiest and most happy people I’d ever met. They found happiness in being with each other and in life’s simple joys. Since I went to the village, I’ve tried to be aware of my own advantages and use them to help other people. I have helped out at local groups and organizations that help people in need, and I have tried to get the word out about the problems people in poor areas face. The most important thing I’ve learned is how important community and connections are. The Indian locals taught me that happiness and satisfaction don’t come from what we have, but from the relationships, we have with other people. I’m thankful for the things I learned on my trip, which I will always remember.
