Abstinence is one approach to treating substance abuse. Other strategies include harm reduction, cognitive behavioral therapy, and pharmacological approaches. Select ONE of these alternatives to abstinence and research at least one advantage and one disadvantage associated with the approach you chose by locating recent (published in the last 10 years) peer-reviewed journal articles to support your argument.
When you reply to your peers, respond to someone who chose a different approach than you did and make the case that your approach is superior to the one that they chose OR find different advantages and disadvantages to their approach.
Be sure to incorporate the prompt in your initial post.

It is extremely important that college students in a Human Service program know how to evaluate the quality of information they read. This is a Human Services program outcome, as specified by the National Organization for Human Services, and the Standards for Human Services Education.
Know that treatment centers are not centers for scientific research–in fact, they are biased sources of information because they profit from addiction and treatment. Remember as well that journalists are not scientists–they profit from clicks and bumps in readership, so they often dramatize or simplify a study to make it seem easier, or even different than it is. Good scientists are precise, base their work on previous studies, carefully review the literature, AND acknowledge the weaknesses in their studies. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews try to organize findings so that we can see which studies found support for effectiveness and which did not.
Please do not share firsthand experiences with addiction or substance abuse in our forums. Note: You will not see your classmates’ posts until you post to the discussion.
Write your post out in Word, and run the spell checker and the grammar checker.
Do not post everything in one day. Your initial post should be made by 3/30; replies should be made on more than two different days.

All posts should be at least 200 words. Be sure to review the resources for this module before you post. You may wish to use one or more as a source for your posts.
