Analyze a social policy designed to address a social problem of concern to gerontology (older adults) from a human rights perspective. In other words, how do we empower older people to know and claim their rights and increase the ability and accountability of individuals and institutions who are responsible for respecting, protecting, and fulfilling rights.
Use your textbook chapters as a starting point for selecting your topic. You will need to access several other references prior to writing your paper.
Topic Example:
Several changes to make Social Security viable in the long-term have been discussed for some time. Some think changes are a good idea and necessary, some do not.
Use the bullet points below to discuss your selected policy. Keep in mind you have only 10-12 pages for this paper, so you must be concise and provide a focused analysis. See below for the grading rubric.
Your paper must include the following sections at a minimum (use APA 6th style headings to separate):
A description of the scope (i.e., broadness) of the problem.
The magnitude (i.e., how big or important) of the problem.
An analysis of the social policy at the local, state, or federal level.
An evaluation of potential impact on the well-being of the target population (older adults).
Discuss arguments that can be made from the other side (aka counter arguments).
Recommendations for policy changes, with justifications.
Summary/Conclusions.
