The condition: Heterotopic ossificationHeterotopic ossification. Soft tissue complications often develop as a result of trauma and orthopedic surgery. Trauma patients (particularly acetabular fractures of the hip and elbow injuries), total hip replacement patients, and high school and college athletes often suffer from long-term complications after injuries. These complications can include chronic inflammation, pain and pathological bone within soft-tissue structures. As Dr. Randy Davis, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University explained in a Beat the Odds Bootcamp interview, once the muscle and nerve tissue is traumatized and extra bone develops in the joints, the injury sets on a cascade of events that lead to long-term pain, swelling and suffering.
