Describe the functionalist, symbolic interactionist, and postmodernist perspectives on society and culture.Provide examples of each in the United States (current or historical).

“Culture shock” is a normal process of adapting to a new culture. It is when a person becomes aware of the differences and conflicts in values and customs between their home and unique cultures. Anxiety, confusion, homesickness, and anger are common feelings. Culture shock occurs through four phases: honeymoon, frustration, adjustment, and acceptance. Individuals experience these stages differently, and the impact and order of each step vary widely. They can, however, guide how we adapt and cope with new cultures. Ethnocentrism is the tendency to look at the world primarily from the perspective of one’s own culture. Part of ethnocentrism is the belief that one’s race, ethnicity, or cultural group is the most important or that some or all aspects of its culture are superior to those of other groups. Cultural relativism is the view that ethical and social standards reflect the cultural context from which they are derived. Cultural relativists uphold that cultures differ fundamentally, as do the moral frameworks that structure relations within different societies.
