Submit Thesis & Objection Assignment
Assignment’s Purpose
The final paper is a large portion of your grade, so this assignment serves as a check-in before that paper. Paper 2 serves as a draft of part one of the final paper and gave you the chance to receive feedback on potential objections.
However, given that the final paper is focused on evaluating the argument, some things will need to change: (1) your thesis will need to be revised, as well as the brief preview of the structure of your paper in your introduction, and (2) Part Two will need to become much more substantive.
Assignment Instructions
In this assignment, you only need to include the three parts below. Be sure to label them “Part One, Part Two, Part Three.”
Part One: Revise your introduction. In this section, rewrite your introduction. Take a look at the instructions for the introduction to your Final Paper. Make sure that you follow them – your thesis should be a clear statement of your position on the author’s argument in the paper that you choose and you should include a brief “roadmap” of what you will be doing in the paper (e.g. explanation of argument, objection, response).
Part Two: Explain your objection. In Paper 2, you presented several objections and stated which one you thought was the strongest against the author’s argument. Take a look at my feedback on this section carefully and reconsider which objection is the strongest based on my feedback. Explain that objection and how it poses a problem for the author’s view here. If you keep the same objection, make sure to revise your explanation of it to reflect any comments I made on Paper 2.
Part Three: Potential Responses. In your final paper, you will have to respond to the objection by stating whether – in your view – the objection poses a serious problem for the author’s argument or whether the author can easily respond to the objection (by revising their argument or presenting a problem for the objection). Here, I would like you to write out your response to the objection so that I can give you feedback on how to improve it for the final paper.
