Global health issue that is currently affecting an underdeveloped or impoverished country

HSHA 435 – Research Paper

Introduction to Global Health
Background
Many countries do not have up-to-date technology, poor infrastructures, poor medical facilities and health systems, poor waste management, no environmental protections or regulations, little to no preventative healthcare, no health education and malnutrition, little emergency response capability, poor housing and education, etc. All of which can lead to a variety of health-related issues and diseases, increased health risks, negative health outcomes, injuries, and fatalities.
Research Paper Assignment
In this research paper you will choose a global health issue that is currently impacting an underdeveloped or impoverished country. You may need to select two depending on what you are discussing. This is an open-ended Research Paper – your topic, your discussion. You may even want to conduct a comparison. For example, let’s say you want to discuss water contamination in an impoverished country or location within that country. You may want to compare this to a more developed country where there is no water contamination, illustrating what the more developed country is doing to prevent contamination (What’s working? What system is in place?, etc.). You might want to conduct a comparison globally. You will need to comprehensively discuss the problems associated with your topic, action taken to address, the problem with those actions (i.e., limited staff, lack of medical supplies, poor infrastructure, etc.), and what you feels needs to be done in order to improve outcomes.
 • Below are simply some ideas, but you are free to create your own topic, or you can select a topic below and expand.
 • Water Contamination and Shortage
 • Child Health, Safety, and Mortality
 • Poverty
 • Maternal and Child Health
 • The Environment
 • Food Shortage and Contamination
 • Burden of Disease (high blood pressure, cancer, heart disease, viruses, etc.)
 • Mental Health
 • Natural Disasters
 • Nutrition
Again, the topics concepts immediately above are not all inclusive, and you may select something that is not on the list. The textbook is also a good source for topics because some of your information may come from your textbook.
Paper Formatting
 • The paper must contain at least 6 full-length pages (at a minimum).
 • 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced text, one-inch margins all around, in a word document (please do not submit in pdf, or a picture, etc.).
 • Include page numbers.
 • Adhere to a recognized writing style for formatting citations throughout the paper, and the bibliography.
 • Your final paper must contain the following parts, in order:
 • Title Page: This should contain paper title, course/section number, your name, professor’s name, and the date.
 • Introduction (not a thesis statement)
 • Main body
 • Conclusion
 • Bibliography
 • Provide transitions to the next topic/subject matter that are clear.
 • Have clear topics introducing the subject matter being discussed.
 • Ensure to include graphs, charts, etc. However, do not expect that the inclusion of a graph, chart, etc., will be counted toward the page count. For example, if you have a graph or a chart that takes up one page, that page will not be counted toward the total page count. Similarly, if a graph or chart takes up half of a page and the other half is written information, that only counts as half a page. Graphs and charts are to support the written information you are providing.
 • YOU NEED TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SOURCES IN ADDITION TO INFORMATION FROM THE TEXTBOOK (Books, Journals, etc.).
 • The title page, table of contents (if you decide to include one), and bibliography DO NOT count toward the required page total.
Grading: Among other things, your paper will be graded partially for its substance, the information used from the sources cited, and the quality of content in your paper.
Point Deductions: Among other things, points will be deducted for the following:
 • Misspelled words, incorrect use of words, missing or incorrect use of commas (colons, semi-colons, apostrophes, etc.).
 • Incorrect syntax (sentence structure).
 • Obvious overuse of small paragraphs (as a means of taking up space and filling-up the page), and obvious creation of space (as a means of taking-up space and filling-up the page).
 • Ten (10) points will be deducted for every page not completed. Keep in mind, this paper is a required six-page minimum. So, for example, if you only submit 4 pages, twenty (20) points will automatically be deducted; ten points for each missing page.
