Option 2: What moral guidelines should we use when it comes to recently introduced healthcare technologies of any kind (you will note and engage with your own examples) and social technologies of any kind (you will note and engage with your own examples)? Involve care-based ethics in your answer.
Healthcare technologies are evolving quickly and along with its advance, morality becomes subjective to the public opinion. When implementing a new technology, especially in the healthcare business, it is important to question moral guidelines in order to properly place it in our everyday lives. For instance, artificial intelligence is at a point where its own creators such as Elon Musk, have been inquiring about safety and data issues. Neuralink is a technological development of a cerebral implant that will help an individual to control different devices such as computers, solely using the electrical activity of neurons, allowing information to be easily accessible (Fourneret, 2020). This procedure may resolve some neurological diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, however, it brings concerns about the ethical aspect of predisposing human being neural activity to artificial intelligence. Questions such as “how is the technology that I am working on going to be used?”, “who will benefit/suffer from it?”, “how much and what social impacts will it have?” and “how does my job fit with my values?” must be inquired in order to provide the best interests for humanity when developing these tools (Luccioni & Bengio, 2019).
Care-based ethics will play an important role in the development of A.I. in a near future for the healthcare system. Empathy is a fundamental attribution to the human nature and it can be learned. Therefore, we might see artificial intelligence learning how to empathize with humans by encoding a set of personal, situational and based on appropriate intentions to their database system, being able to pull out the information that best matches with the signs they will be receiving from an individual. This scenario looks like a sci-fi movie but it is the world we will be living within the next years.
