Marie-Guillermine Benoist: A female Artist prior to 1850
Matisse stated, “Art is the ownership of objects. When you recognize the object deeply, you can interpret it with the shape that defines it completely.” This is the vital effort of this creator who paints from time, and no one did it more joyfully or with more desirable passion than Matisse himself.
This female artist I choose to track down is Marie- Guillermine Benoist who was one of a rare female artist not to be the daughter or wife of a painter, Marie-Guillemine Benoist (1768-1826) was a free-spirited artist. Her artistic education was of high quality, she became a pupil of Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun from the age of 13 under the impulse of her father who encouraged her artistic abilities. In 1786, 5 years later, she joined the studio of Jacques-Louis David, one of the first workshops to open its doors to women, in the presence of men.
