A ‘critical answer’ is one that addresses the central issue the question raises in a clear, probing, and original manner. In some cases, this involves offering a clear and accurate summary of an author’s argument for some position and providing a thoughtful objection or challenge to that argument. In these cases, it is acceptable to divide the essay into two sections: (i) an exposition of some extant argument in the literature, and (ii) a critical evaluation of the argument. However, there are circumstances in which a different organization would be more appropriate. You should judge for yourself whether a simple ‘two-step’ organization is optimal, or whether it makes more sense to adopt a different organization.
