Assessment instructions
Events such as the Coronavirus Pandemic, Brexit and the global cost of living crisis have continued to present challenges for the Events Industry. However, disruption can create change, which in turn creates opportunity. You will address the following question, while providing a specific focus on one of the topics listed below.
How can event related businesses maximise the new opportunities that
are emerging in a changing and challenging business environment?
Discuss and advise the industry on any appropriate measures they could consider for a successful future, with a focus on the short and mid-term opportunities (i.e., the next 3 – 5 years). This will be presented as a 3,000 word essay and your work should be supported by evidence of research that will support and justify your recommendations for the topic that you choose to consider.
Topic 1: Technology. You should consider how recent developments in the technology that supports and enhances events can be put to best use for events organisers. You may focus on a specific area of the industry if you prefer.
Topic 2: Sustainable Practice. Following the sustainability initiatives that are being led by the United Nations you should consider how the sustainability debate stays active and relevant and is applied effectively in events related businesses. You may focus on a specific area of the industry if you prefer.
Topic 3: Your specific area of interest. You should consider how changes in the business environment can create positive opportunities for event organisers to grow and develop new and existing business opportunities. You may focus on any area of the industry that is of specific interest to you.
Personal Reflection
You should also include a 500-word personal reflection that evaluates your personal skills, values and attitudes and their fit to the requirement of your chosen career path. This can be written in the first person and the use of a recognised reflective structure (e.g., Kolb or Gibbs) is recommended in structuring this reflection.
Essay Structure
During the course of your studies, and in this specific module, you will have developed a range of academic and practical Events Management skills and knowledge. You should now be able to provide comprehensive and critical analysis of how industry trends are developing and what this could mean in the way of new opportunities for a range of key stakeholders and the wider network that supports the events industry. This will further prepare you for employment within the current and emerging workplace.
Here is some general guidance regarding the sections of your essay. The essay SHOULD NOT be written in the first person and all word counts are indicative only.
Introduction (Indicative word count – 500 words)
This should provide the background to the topic under discussion and outline the key objectives of the essay. This might include any relevant historical context and could include data that demonstrates the size and scale of the industry under discussion and the impact that the recent disruption has had on that sector.
Main Body (1,000 words)
In this section you should use secondary research that includes, but is not limited to, academic journals, recent academic texts, articles, relevant event management theory and identification of new and emerging initiatives in event management to critically analyse the strategies that can be considered by event organisers in maximising the new opportunities that are emerging because of the recent disruption.
Conclusion and Recommendations (1,000 words)
You should refer to the objectives of your essay and the key concepts discussed in the main body to provide justified recommendations for the industry with regards to any appropriate measures they could consider for a successful future. Your work should be supported by evidence of research that will support and justify your recommendations and in doing so ensure that they are relevant and realistic for the topic that you choose to consider.
IMPORTANT: You may also rely upon the material that any relevant subject specialist guest speaker delivered in these sessions, and this may be cited in the body of the paper.
