Anorexia Nervosa is a disorder that I have been familiar with since I was in elementary school. It seems intense to know about this disorder at such a young age but it’s known that individuals can be diagnosed with the disorder early on in their lives. Anorexia Nervosa is a type of eating disorder where the individual diagnosed with it has lost a huge amount of weight or is extremely thin. When it comes to Anorexia Nervosa, you cannot just diagnose the individual with the disorder based on their appearance. The criteria the individual has to meet in order to be diagnosed consists of fear of gaining weight, restricting themselves from eating, and having negative thoughts about their body. The criteria might seem simple but it goes deeper. The symptoms can differ from physical to emotional. Physical symptoms include dry skin, fragile nails, dizziness, thinning of hair, etc. (National Eating Disorders Association, 2018). Emotional symptoms include making excuses so they don’t have to eat, they are in denial about their disorder, they feel the need to be in control, etc. (National Eating Disorders Association, 2018). The rate of Anorexia Nervosa is more common among women than men. Women have a three times higher rate of developing Anorexia (Anorexia Statistics: Gender, Race & Socioeconomics | Bulimia.com, n.d.) Yet, we cannot ignore the fact that men make up around 20% of people diagnosed with Anorexia (Anorexia Statistics: Gender, Race & Socioeconomics | Bulimia.com, n.d.). Moving on to the cognitive factors, this can include them telling themselves to go the extra mile to be skinnier or look at calories to determine which foods will make them gain weight or lose (Ms, 2020)
