Follow a clear and logical structure. Remain focused on the question and answer the question clearly.
Begin the review with a clear introduction.
Ensure that the body of the literature review is broken into a series of paragraphs, the use of subtitles is strongly encouraged. Paragraphs/subtitles are the building blocks of your review, so it is important that there is a cohesive and logical flow between paragraphs. It is important to identify, discuss and compare key issues raised in sources and highlight deficiencies of knowledge evident in the research topic if there are any.
End your review with a concluding summary paragraph that also addresses the initial question. Your conclusion should be supported by the facts that you have presented in the body of the review. Note that there may not be a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer. You may also wish to propose future directions for research.
Reference appropriately using the UoA Harvard system. Check spelling and punctuation so that your review is free of typographical and grammatical errors.
A literature review should not just be a summary of each source. That would be more like an annotated bibliography.
Instead, you need to:
compare and contrast each source to other relevant literature on the topic
critically evaluate each source
indicate how each source contributes to the body of knowledge about the topic
integrate your discussion of the sources into your argument about the state of knowledge on the topic

Strict word count of 2500-3000 words (excluding reference list and in-text references).
Only articles from peer-review journals may be used and at least 15 articles must be cited
Where possible, original rather than review articles should be cited.
We would suggest starting with review articles when you start your research to help with familiarity with the topic, you should then move to read the primary sources
Where possible cite sources within the last 10 years, research moves fast and sources can soon become outdated. However don’t feel like you can’t cite older papers- if these are the seminal papers in your topic area then they should be appropriately referenced.
