Demonstrate a critical understanding of social attitudes and beliefs towards disability

This is a presentation about social attitudes and beliefs towards disability

Where our attitudes and beliefs come from
How those attitudes and beliefs are reproduced today
What are the implications for your own practice?
Focussing on one specific manifestation of disability:
explain how social attitudes towards that disability developed historically
and how those ideas are culturally reproduced today
Explain the significance of this for the modern day practitioner.
The reference to ‘one specific manifestation of disability’ means you should choose to focus on either physical disability, mental ill-health or learning disability
It will be important here to say why you’ve selected this area and to ‘define’ what we mean by these terms.
When you are thinking about explaining how social attitudes towards your chosen area of disability developed historically, don’t try and cover everything.
Select two or three examples of changing attitudes over time that you think are important to understand.
We then want you to show that you understand the notion of cultural reproduction.
You will need to explain this concept and then illustrate how it operates through the use of an example.
Either a film, or a book, or a photograph, or a painting, or a TV programme…..
Conclude by thinking about why the modern day practitioner working with children, young people and families needs to understand this story of how disability has been socially constructed.
