What is an annotated bibliography? An annotated bibliography is: a carefully selected list of academic
sources, complete with relevant information about those sources, gathered for the purpose of
conducting a research project.
To successfully complete this assignment, do the following:
1. Identify 6 peer-reviewed, academic articles or research reports (e.g. Prison Policy Initiative
reports or FWD) relevant to your research question. Determine relevancy by asking yourself:
does this article or report have information in it that helps me answer my research question?
2. Create a reference page with annotations for all 6 of your sources. Use APA formatting.
3. Underneath each reference, write up your annotations for that source. Each annotation should
be two paragraphs long and address these points:
o Summarize the argument(s) of your source: What was their research question, what
data, quotes, or information did they gather that helped them answer their question,
and what were their main conclusions? (One substantial paragraph)
o Assess the relevance and value of the source: In this paragraph, write about the specific
insights this source has for your paper by answering the following question: What part
of my research question does this source help me answer and how? (One substantial
paragraph)
4. Edit your document for grammar, proper formatting of references, and depth of entries.
5. Save your document as either a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file and upload it to BbLearn by the due
date. What is an annotated bibliography? An annotated bibliography is: a carefully selected list of academic
