For this discussion board please select ONE of the following prompts to respond to (tell us which one at the beginning of your prompt too!) :
A. Turn an analyitical eye to one manifestation of popular culture that portrays or discusses parenting: a magazine, website, an episode of a tv show, a movie, a book, or a product line. Taking the case in its entirety, explore how it does or does not reflect the discussion of parenting in this chapter. Consider: Who is represented? How are they represented? What ideologies about parenting are being reproduced or challenged? How? What stereotypes about masculinity or femininity are affirmed or undermined? Are relations between parents presented? In what way? Who is the implicit or explicit audience? What lessons do you think a reader/viewer is likely to learn? Remember to include a question for your classmates.
B. Many of us start out doing “pre-market” jobs in the form of household chores. Often, our parent(s)/guardian(s) will give us an allowance. As we get a little older and our world expands, we might also hold pre-market jobs working for others in the community. This is an activity where I want you to reflect on your pre-market job experiences (and compensation) and ask a couple of other people about their pre-market job experiences and monetary compensation they were paid for these jobs. Start by doing the following:

If you don’t already have your free NYTimes subscription through ASU you can request it here.

whether you think most people think the jobs were feminine, and
how much you earned for these services.
The same information in above bullet points for the individuals you spoke with.
If you are comfortable sharing you can also include demographic information for the people you chatted with.
If you are a parent you can reflect on whether and how the gender wage gap starts in your home and you can reach out and chat with your friends who are parents too.
