Writing a formal analysis upon examining a work of art can improve your understanding of art along with continuing to cultivate your critical thinking skills and helping develop a deeper appreciation for art.

Directions:
For this assignment, select a work of art from any chapter of your textbook and write an essay examining the work using the elements and principles of art. To start, spend some time with your work, examining the form and content of your work. Scan the piece and think about why the work speaks to you. Next, using Part I of your textbook make a list of the elements and principles of art as they relate to your chosen piece. You may find that not all elements and principles are in every work you examine. Upon completion of your examination select two elements and two principles to discuss in your essay on your chosen work. Use your list to write a thorough, well detailed description of the work keeping in mind that your audience may not have ever seen the work. The more detail you can incorporate the more vividly your reader will be able to visualize the work you selected.
