Essay 2
Your answer must be between 1,500 and 2,000 words. Citations: Chicago format. Include a Title for your paper, bibliography; and at least one quote with a citation including the page number, from each article you reference (Explain why you chose that quote).
As you might remember, a new controversy started a couple of years ago in Charlotte, North Carolina, when a group of politicians repealed an ordinance that required specific restrooms, showers, and similar facilities for people of different genders. During the debate generated by this initiative, E. Gregory Wallace, a constitutional law professor, published this opinion piece in The Hill. Please, read professor’s Wallace article. Then, read and watch the short videos included in this note. Based on the material covered during the semester, provide a critical analysis of the bathroom discussion. To do so, explain the two main positions on this debate. In other words, lay out the main arguments, in support and against, gender neutral facilities. After explaining both approaches, take a clear position on this debate. Your decision to either support or challenge the arguments included in the article should be based on your own convictions and the material covered during our class. You might have other ways of looking at this debate too, e.g. that trans people should be able to use the bathroom that corresponds with their chosen gender identity. Engage with the debates in your response. Include Patricia Hills Collins’ piece “Prison of our Bodies, Closet for our Minds” (Week 6) in your discussion.
To successfully address this question, you need to:
– Provide examples and include quotes with appropriate citations from at least THREE articles assigned for this course (use texts that you did not use for the first essay).
– Include some statistics to support your argument or challenge the arguments presented by people with whom you disagree. For instance, if you are making the case that gender neutral bathrooms put women and kids at risk, include statistics that address these concerns.
Use these five articles
The SAGE Handbook of Gender and Communication Gender, Race, and Media Representation
Gerschick Toward a Theory of Disability and Gender
When sex and gender collide by Kristina R Olsen
Lugones The Coloniality of Gender
Feminist theory of Disability
