1. Read two ethnographies (Nisa and Yanomamo)
2. Look at variation within and between ethnographies in aspects of life history, behaviour, social organization, etc.
3. Pick 1 or 2 (related) variations to analyze and discuss the source(s) of variation (why do they differ)
• E.g. of variations: how long babies are nursed by mother, who else takes care of babies (e.g. paternal care?), status of women vs (or and) men, age at which children start to work, sexual division of labor, mating system, marriage system, gender roles of children, differential investment in children, etc.
• “Sources” = Life history, ecology, development, genetics, culture
• Usually NOT one source of explanation only; your discussion will usually address how various sources of variation interact to produce the observed outcome.
4. Logical arguments explaining the variation relative to the theory presented in the unit.
a. E.g. Natural selection, kin selection, ecological patterns, developmental processes, etc.
b. Description is NOT explanation
c. E.g. some aspect of male vs female = variation
But how males and female vary differs across ethnographies, why?
d. The variations on which you choose to focus are part of the outcome. Trivial or simplistic variations will have trivial explanations and you won’t be able to demonstrate the extent of your understanding of concepts and their application.
5. Keep description to the necessary minimum; use description to illustrate your point, not
to make your point
6. Be very explicit in your explanations of cause and effect and relate to theory.
7. You will have to do outside reading and cite outside sources!
8. Cite in text and provide a list of Literature Cited at the end.
e.g. More robust body size is a genetic response to cold climates (Relethford 2010:410).
Literature cited: list in alphabetical order all sources you have referenced! This includes urls.
Only those cited in the text belong in the reference list.
9. Writing counts: You have to express your ideas clearly in coherent paragraphs. This can only be
done with clear, grammatically correct sentences. State concepts, arguments etc in your own words and cite where you get the ideas.
10. Plagiarism will be reported.ESSAY (ANALYTICAL PAPER) (25%)
