Discussion question

Learning Goal: I’m working on a history discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

Ok students, so we are continuing to build our academic and critical thinking skills with each FD assignment. With FD #1 you conducted online research to discuss current conditions and critical issues based on race, class, gender/sexuality and ethnicity to get an understanding of varied systemic inequities. Take note that people and their experiences don’t fit into any single category (race, class, gender/sexuality and ethnicity), but are usually “intersectional” (see Intersectionality (Links to an external site.)by Kimberly Crenshaw) located in several categories of experience. How we got here, in particular how and why these systems of inequity evolve, is where our learning of history becomes important. Equally important, is how those most oppressed have historically and continue to respond, resist and challenge these systems.

In FD #2, you are required to utilize and cite the “assigned materials” (not online research) to further build our critical thinking skills. You will write statements (not an essay) that demonstrate how you identify historical systems and institutions of oppression; compare and contrast the experiences of those impacted (using a race, class, gender/sexuality and/or ethnic framework); and how those impacted respond, resist and challenge those identified systems and institutions.

Demonstrating your Critical Thinking will also be very important. See What is Critical Thinking? (Links to an external site.) to prepare.

These Forum Discussion exercises are preparing you for essay writing assignments. So the work you put in now will ease the work load for the essay assignments.

Objectives and Purpose:

  • The purpose of FD #2 is to analyze and discuss the shared, common and/or differing accounts of historical experiences based on race, class, gender/sexuality and ethnicity.
  • Demonstrate a historical analysis of systematic and institutional oppression.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how particular groups resisted and challenged systematic and institutional oppression.
  • Demonstrate an analysis of “assigned materials”.

Question/Prompt:

  1. Write 1 statement (label this “1.”) that demonstrate your analysis of systemic and institutional oppression in California. Compare and contrast the experiences of targeted social groups and/or discuss the “intersectionality” of these experiences. Underneath this statement bullet point list 2 examples and/or quotes from 2 different assigned materials (two different authors or documentaries) as “evidence”.
  2. Write 1 statements (label this “2.”) that compares and contrasts how targeted/impacted groups resisted, challenged, rebelled and/or transformed those systems and institutions of oppression in California. Underneath this statement bullet point list 2 examples and/or quotes from 2 different assigned materials (two different authors or documentaries) as “evidence”.

***Each statement should demonstrate critical thinking. Each statement should be clear, precise and no longer than two sentences (you are not writing in essay format).

***Cite from “assigned materials” only (not additional online research). You may utilize assigned materials from the beginning of the semester to the present.

Example Statement:

Under the Spanish Mission system, American Indians suffered under slave like conditions similar to African Americans under the plantation system in the South. Unlike American Indian men, American Indian women suffered additional layers of oppression, such as sexual violence.
