Gómez, a professor of law at the UCLA School of Law in Los Angeles discusses her book “Manifest Destinies: The Making of the Mexican-American Race,” which explores how America’s newest citizens fit into the existing racial class after the war.

Discuss in context what it means when you hear discourse stating, We didn’t cross the border; the border crossed us by examining the impact of the Mexican American War & the significance/consequences of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo on Mexicans and the original indigenous inhabitants of the land. Discuss the new border it establishes, the life Mexican-Americans begin to experience due to this new boundary, and reflect on how the examined impact and significance affect us today.
