I met the most peculiar man at the marketplace in Athens today. He was conversing with a group of poor men when he called me over and introduced himself as Socrates. They were discussing the Melian debate and the vicious attack on Melos (Carr). He would attempt to call over other pedestrians but many just ignored him. He was an older man, about 53 years of age, but his wisdom was ageless (Nails). He asked questions that would make me contradict myself. He asked, “What is justice?” in which I replied with confidence, “Justice is fairness.” Socrates grinned like he knew what I was going to say before I said it. “What is fairness?” he asked. This time I hesitated, “Equality?” Another smile cracked on his face as he asked, “What is equality?” I attempted to keep up but I am nearly half his age. “Equality is sameness,” I said. “Yes, equality is sameness. Is this sameness present in Athens?” he asked. I thought about it for a minute and uttered, “It is not.” Socrates flashed another grin and stated, “Indeed it is not, for only the ‘demos’ may participate in our democracy” (“Ancient Greek Democracy”). It was not until I met Socrates that I began to question Athenian democracy.

I attended the comedy called The Birds by Aristophanes this evening at the theatron (Linder). They referred to my dear friend Socrates in this play, saying he is “Socratifying” the youth (Linder). I never realized how much influence Socrates had in Athens, for the young are inspired while the loyal are threatened. Many citizens blame Socrates for Athenian youth revolting and joining forces with the Spartans (Linder). Although, they may have a point. It was the same Socrates who inspired me two years ago to observe Athens, and the world as a whole, with a different set of eyes. But I would not say he has “socratified” me. For he did not implant ideas into my head but drew my own thoughts and opinions outward. I could not believe how anyone could be fearful of one old man. Especially since it has been Athens using fear to control the people for as long as I can remember (Carr).”
