Using the documents from
Document Packet #3 and textbook evidence (Foner, Give me liberty!), analyze at
least two types of American perspectives on the institution of slavery and
its expansion, c. 1790 – 1860.
Thesis
·
The thesis must address at least two (2) specific kinds of
perspectives on slavery and its expansion in the specified time frame.

The thesis must make a historically defensible claim; the paper
must contain an argument that can be corroborated or
contradicted using evidence.
·
The thesis must appear in the introductory paragraph of the
paper.
·
Merely re-stating the prompt is insufficient.
Contextualization
·
Demonstrate an understanding of the basic meaning of at
least four (4) documents from Paper #3 Document Packet.
o You may
demonstrate understanding by correctly placing the document in valid historical
context or stating its significance in your own words or contextual quotation.
o Cite
documents using the Document number in the packet (parenthetical citations or
footnotes are acceptable).

Provide at least two (2) pieces of secondary
evidence or historical context.
o You may
use material from the textbook as a secondary source to provide additional
evidence (cite the page number from the Foner textbook).
o This
evidence may not be drawn from the documents themselves.
o Passing
references to outside evidence are insufficient; you must explicitly link your
evidence to your argument and/or the documents.
Analysis and Synthesis

Group the documents in an appropriate way that demonstrates
a relationship between them and advances your argument.
o A group
must contain at least two documents.
o A group
must be contained within its own distinct paragraph other than the
introduction.

Group the documents in an additional way
that demonstrates a relationship between them and advances
your argument.
o A group
must contain at least two documents.
o A group
must be contained within its own distinct paragraph other than the introduction
(and distinct from the first group).

Analyze at least one (1) relationship
between two (2) or more pieces of evidence using historical
synthesis skills.
o Evidence
points can be linked by comparing or contrasting two points of
view or historical trends, demonstrating a pattern of change over time,
or showing a cause and effect relationship between two events.
o You may
earn points for synthesis by showing relationships between documents and/or
outside evidence within groups or between groups.
