Formal email to elected representative about one crime control policy issue and advocating for action

  • 500 words or less
  • Single-spaced; 12-point Times New Roman font; 1-inch margins
  • Discuss only one crime control issue/problem
  • Advocate for the elected representative to take action (i.e., support a policy/program, continue to support a policy/organization, or oppose a policy/program)  to address the problem  in your community
  • The body of the email should only include 4 short paragraphs:
    • 1st paragraph: A brief description of who you are, why you are writing, and what action you want the representative to take.
    • 2nd paragraph: A brief explanation of the issue/problem, including why should the issue be important to the representative (i.e., how does it impact their constituents)?
    • 3rd paragraph: A description of 3 ways your community will be impacted if the elected representative takes/fails to take action. This part can be in paragraph form or a bulleted list. 
    • Final paragraph: A concluding paragraph that summarizes your call to action and thanks the representative for their consideration. 
  • Use formal language and tone
  • Include email formatting
    • A professional greeting (i.e., Dear Congressperson Ilhan Omar, Dear Mayor Jacob Frey) 
    • A professional closing (i.e., Ends with “Thank you,” “Sincerely,” or “Best Regards,”).
