Instructions: Write a paper on the following topic. The paper should be 3-5 pages in length (title page is not included in the page count). It must have a title page, be double spaced, use twelve point Times New Roman font, one inch margins, and have no extra spaces between paragraphs. Do not collaborate with other students and do not make use of sources that were not assigned for this class. 
Prompt: In his  Being and Nothingness: An Essay in Phenomenological Ontology, Jean-Paul Sartre introduces the concepts of shame and bad faith. Describe an original scenario that illustrates one of the following terms as Sartre uses them: 
1. Shame 
2. Bad Faith  
Your scenario should be written from the first person perspective. 
The paper should have the following elements: 
1. A description of your scenario. (This section should be at least half a page in length) 
2. A description of how your scenario exemplifies Sartre’s concept of shame or bad faith. Be sure to describe how the world appears in the experience of shame or bad faith and how you appear to yourself in one of those states.  Be sure to discuss the difference between subject and object that is relevant to these concepts. This section should have at least 3 quotations from Being and Nothingness. (this part shold be at least 1 page in length) 
3. A section that discusses whether these experiences reveal something fundamental about what it means to be human. (this part should be at least 1 page in length)

1. Clarity of writing and presentation, following format instructions. 
2. Accurate portrayal of motivations and arguments. (e.g. Does it say what Sartre believes and why he believes it?) 
3. Use of the text to support your portrayal of motivations and arguments. 
4. Critical examination of arguments and motivations. (e.g. Does it discuss whether or not Sartre’s reasons do indeed justify his conclusions?
