Definition and Observation of Target Behaviors
This research paper asks you to practice fundamental skills involved in defining and observing target behaviors. You will not be asked to observe a specific behavior. Instead, you will perform tasks that are needed before you can either conduct a behavioral observation or collect relevant data. Here’s what you need to do to complete this paper:
1. This research paper will center on three target behaviors. The first two behaviors are running and studying. Those are behaviors should be well known to you. The third target behavior will be of your choice.
Pick a behavior that is also familiar to you. You can rely on your personal or professional experiences when making your choice. Nevertheless, clearly identify the behavior that you have picked, so that there is no ambiguity as to what the third target behavior is.
2. Provide your own operational definition for each of the three target behaviors. Define each behavior separately.
Use active verbs when writing your definition. Strive to be objective and unambiguous. Refer to observable characteristics of the behavior and avoid using labels or terms that need to be defined themselves. An operational definition must be specific, clear, and complete so that others can recognize any instances of the target behavior without making any inferences or assumptions.
3. Identify both the relevant dimension of behavior and type of measurement for each of the three target behaviors.
Make sure that the behavioral dimension for each target behavior is aligned with the operational definition that you provided. Briefly explain how the chosen type of measurement fits the respective behavior.
4. Describe the steps or procedure that you would follow to observe one target behavior. Pick that behavior from the three target behaviors that you have examined in this paper so far.
The procedure for observing the target behavior should be consistent with the operational definition and behavioral dimension for that behavior. Integrate the type of measurement that you chose into the procedure. It must be clear how you would collect data from your observations.
Include a sample data sheet or observation form if it helps you to describe the observation procedure. Include any data sheets as an appendix to your paper.

5. Use a professional style when writing your paper. Proofread and spellcheck your submission. Follow APA style. You may include a cover page for your paper.
Prepare your paper independently. You may review the textbook and course materials for this course as you complete this assignment. You may also consult me as needed. You are not required to look for additional sources, but you are free to do so. Adhere to APA style whenever you include a quote or reference in your paper. As warranted, include a references page at the end of your paper. Follow APA format when listing any references.
Your paper may consist of a 3 to 5-page Word document (double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins, not including your data sheet or any cover or reference pages). This is just a suggested length, though. You are encouraged to simply produce a document addressing all the aforementioned points.
Submit your paper through Canvas by midnight on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. This paper is worth 120 points towards your grade in this course.
Late submissions will only be accepted according to the policy described in the syllabus. Penalties for late submissions will be assessed on top of your obtained grade as set in the syllabus.
