THEORY USED TO SUPPORT TOPIC: Social Bond Theory: Travis Hirschi, an American criminologist, created the
social bond theory in the1960s based on his work assessing the reasons
why people commit crimes. He felt there was some type of pattern within
the lives of those who chose to commit criminal acts. Hirschi felt
people who weren’t able to form positive social bonds (relationships) in
various ways within their community would ultimately be more likely to
pursue deviant behaviors.

The four elements of the social bond theory are attachment,
commitment, involvement, and common values. Attachment is formed with
others throughout a person’s life, ranging from family to strangers in
their community. Those attachments create commitments to said bonds,
enforcing the desire to maintain positive relationships. A person’s
level of involvement with their bonds and their community will
ultimately depend on the level of attachment and commitment they create,
along with common values, that dictate how and why they act the way
they do.

In lieu of a final exam, students are required to compose a research paper no longer than 6 pages identifying a topic that was not covered (but should have been) in CRM 349. They should justify (not based on their personal opinion but on content from the course or other scholarly content)
why this topic should be included in future CRM 349 courses. This paper
should also discuss a theory discussed in this course that would best
frame the topic they identify. Finally, students should propose two
questions future students
should be able to answer about the topic they have identified in future
courses. This paper is worth 20% of the final course grade. American
Psychological Association (APA) format is required for in paper citations and references. A minimum of 3 academic/scholarly sources are required.
Students will be graded on Integration of knowledge/synthesis of
material, topic focus/direction, depth of discussion, incorporation of 3
scholarly journal sources and spelling & grammar, & citations
(APA format).
