Please write a reflection paper on protests, First Amendment policing, and public disorder (hereafter, I will refer to this as protest policing). Your written reflection must be a critical and thoughtful reflection of this topic.
Your reflection paper must clearly demonstrate that you took time to fully consider how the podcasts and external research relate to course material and how the issues discussed in the podcasts impacts policing, the community, or the larger criminal justice system. You will write this paper in a typical APA essay format, including an introductory paragraph, body, and conclusion.
The focus you take is up to you, but consider the following prompts:
- What role, if any, does Routine Activities Theory or Situational Crime Prevention have in understanding protest policing?
- How can procedural justice be applied to creating responses or policies on protest policing?
- What role does protest policing have in promoting legitimacy? Or, alternatively, a legitimacy crisis?
- Has increased militarization of policing made protest policing easier or more challenging?
- Why is it essential to understand guardian and warrior culture within the context of protest policing?
- Do protests and the Black community provide a unique challenge to American police? Why (not)?
It is unlikely that you can fully address all of the prompts above – they are offered to ‘get the creative juices flowing’.
Your reflection paper will include the following sections:
Section I: Introduction (approximately 3-4 sentences)
Section II: Body of the Paper:
Description of main concepts we have discussed in class that you view as relevant to the topic (approx. 1-2 pages) and
Analytical Reflection (approx. 2 pages)
Section III: Conclusion (approx.. 3-4 sentences)
Section IV: References Links to an external site.Links to an external site.(new page)
- NOTE: One of your references MUST be Deuchar, Vaughn and Fallik. Be sure to incorporate the required textbook in your paper. Two bonus points if you include a properly cited direct quote.
A well-developed paper will be approximately 5-6 pages in length (12 pt font, 1” margins, double spaced, include page numbers on each page). Submit papers in *.docx format (not pdf).
Students will submit an electronic copy in the designated space here in Canvas. Failure to submit an electronic copy will result in a grade of zero points for the assignment. For further information on how these papers will be graded, an electronic copy of the grading rubric will be available on Canvas.
A quick word about citing podcasts in papers: The correct format for your references section is:
Executive Producer, E. P. (Executive Producer). (Date of publication). Title of podcast episode (Episode number) [Audio podcast episode]. In Title of podcast. Production company. URL
For example:
Ratcliffe, J. (Host). (2021a). # 35 (Carmen Best) [Audio podcast episode]. In The Reducing Crime Podcast. https://www.reducingcrime.com/podcastLinks to an external site.
