Since World War II, the United States has developed a
“Way of War” that is characterized by a reliance on technology,
overwhelming firepower, and a preference for quick, decisive victories much
like we experienced during desert storm in the 90’s. This approach is often
referred to as “shock and awe” and is designed to overwhelm the enemy
with a combination of precision-guided munitions, airpower, and ground forces.
The United States also strongly emphasizes joint operations, which involve the
coordination of multiple branches of the military and allied forces, as well as
the use of special operations forces to conduct targeted strikes against
high-value targets. Additionally, the United States has a strong focus on force
protection, which involves minimizing casualties among its own forces using
advanced technology and tactics. Overall, the American approach to conflict is
characterized by a combination of technological superiority, overwhelming
force, and a preference for quick, decisive victories.
America’s approach in previous wars has been to build up its
military force and initiate the liberation of countries on our own terms. I
believe this method is still feasible if we had to engage in decisive fighting
with every country on the planet minus China. China will likely take the
initiative to attack another country such as Taiwan first. War with China will
likely be reactive and will not allow for a quick decisive fight. Many aspects
of our “Way of War” will be neutral or inferior when engaging with China near
their country and in and around Taiwan. How we choose to fight China and the
actions we plan need to be updated to deal with this growing threat.
