Legally Blonde and The Devil Wears Prada: what makes a blockbuster ‘chick flick’

Description from the assignment sheet-

you will
be asked to compare/contrast two movies in order to evaluate the premise of one of the assigned
Common Culture essays*, using at least 4 secondary sources to prove your argument (at least
one source for each film). Use direct references and quotations from both the films and your
research to support your points. At least two sources must come from a qualified scholarly
book chapter or journal article. Please adhere to the paper guidelines (12
point Times New Roman, double spaced, 1 inch margins). Remember to use parenthetical
citation and include a works cited page with your essay.
*the essay being used is “From Chick Flicks to Millenial Blockbusters” by Ashley York, which I am attaching.
Using York’s descriptions of a “women’s blockbuster”, the paper will analyze how Legally Blonde fell short and The Devil Wears Prada succeeded. While it was not a blockbuster film, Legally Blonde(2001) did succeed in planting the seeds for the future women’s blockbusters, which includes The Devil Wears Prada(2006).
The descriptions of a women’s blockbuster are found in the fourth paragraph of the York essay, mainly 3 characteristics: A women’s blockbuster is high concept, has a culture of consumerism (product placements, commercial tie-ins, cross-promotions), and a push in the direction of ancillary marketing and foreign box office. These three characteristics are further expanded on in the rest of York’s essay.
