Topic: Is ethics dependent or independent of belief/existence of God?
1. Write a 6-page thesis-driven essay.
2. This paper requires you to identify a philosophical issue of importance to you and present a clear thesis on the topic.
3. Your goal is to explain your philosophical topic to an audience (me) in a more academic tone as a thesis-driven essay. You will use your readings to support your argument or to present a counterargument, depending on your topic. As such, focus on a close analysis of the texts while providing direct evidence (through relevant quotes) to support your thesis.
4. Please refer to pages 100-102 (Attachment 1)
5. I wanted to hear more of your voice in the paper. Let me know what thoughts you have.
6. Do you think that morality ultimately depends on God (that God is the author of the moral law)? Why or Why not? (This offers your response to the Euthyphro dilemma as outlined in your online text – please be sure to discuss the implications of agreeing with either part of the dilemma).
That studying these thinkers and topics this semester has hopefully led you to reflect on the nature of the self, arguably the most important (and mysterious) philosophical question. In this way, I do think all of your final papers unavoidably will look at the question of what it means to be a person/self in relation to other questions studied, such as metaphysics, knowledge, free will, the mind, personal identity, and ethics.
