Milestone Two: Strategic Analysis—Pathogen Characteristics and Public Health Program Strategies

Submit a paper describing the characteristics of the pathogen (Cryptosporidium)  in your selected case study. First, you will identify the pathogen and justify your identification, describe the ecological principles that affect the pathogen, and describe the negative impact. Then, you will discuss, in general terms, the differences between biological, chemical, and physical agents and mitigation strategies for each type. Finally, you will describe the specific precautions and strategies that must be taken into account when considering the pathogen you have identified. This milestone will be graded with the Milestone Two Rubric.

Submit a paper describing the characteristics of the pathogen in your case study.
Be sure to include the following critical elements:
II. Strategic Analysis: In this section you will analyze the case, looking specifically at the impacts of the biologic agent on society and the effectiveness of attempted mitigation strategies.
 A. Risk Characterization of Pathogen
 1. Identify the type of pathogen and its particular characteristics, justifying your identification. Explain how you identified the type of pathogen.
 2. Describe how the pathogen negatively impacts the health of the community. Explain how the pathogen is transmitted and how the method of transmission is related to the pathogen’s composition.
 B. Ecological Perspectives: Outline the ecological principles of the pathogen and how these principles affect the likelihood of control by addressing the following questions which leverage the Social-Ecological Model (SEM) and One Health perspectives.
 1. Individual Level: Explain how policy may account for the biological/genetic factors that affect a population’s health at the individual level.
2. Relationship Level: Provide an example of how policy may conceptualize disease control at the relationship level.
3. Community Level: With respect to the pathogen and related public health efforts in the case study, describe the role of herd immunity—a community level concept—in the policy’s focus.
4. Societal Level: Explain why policy would address related social or cultural norms (societal level constructs).
 5. One Health: Explain the role of the pathogen within the interconnections among human health, animal health, and ecosystem health.
C. Pathogen Prevention and Control:
 1. Assess the mitigation strategies that have attempted or are attempting to address this disease, for their strengths and gaps in preventing and controlling this disease.
Explain how these strategies specifically address the biologic principles of the disease. [PHE-510-04]
D. Pathogen Agency
1. Differentiate between how biological, chemical, and physical agents affect human health. Specify key characteristics of the different agents.
2. Assess how mitigation strategies differ between biological, chemical, and physical agents. Explain how the specific characteristics of the agents inform the mitigation strategies. Provide examples related to your specific biologic agent.

E. Program Strategies
1. Assess the role of the specific pathogen type and its associated characteristics in the public health programs targeting the specific pathogen. Explain how the programs target their strategies to address the specific pathogen.
 2. Describe specific strategies used by public health programs for preventing and controlling the specific pathogen in local and global settings.

 F. Special Considerations
 1. As this is a biological agent, describe the specific precautions or strategies that must be considered in mitigating this specific agent.
2. Describe special precautions that must be considered when attempting to mitigate biologic agent
