For this assignment, you will write a traditional literary research paper. You will choose any 2 primary readings from our course—novels, short stories, poems, (non-academic) literary essays —and compose an essay wherein you compare and/or contrast the texts. You should perform close readings of both texts, focusing on the literary devices and techniques used by the writer. Then, you will devise an original thesis about the similarities or differences between the focus texts, which you will defend using cited quotes from these texts and 5 scholarly sources. You should relate your argument back to one or more of the themes addressed in our course. The central aim of this assignment is to first demonstrate the relationship between 2 course readings; then, to explain the significance of this relationship with respect to broader cultural trends in the United States in the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s.
