Module 6 Discussion Post – due Feb 17

START THIS POST EARLY SO YOU CAN COMPLETE BOTH PARTS ON TIME.

FIRST: Read the case given in the prompt.

SECOND: Reply to PART ONE (reply as usual to the discussion post prompt)

THIRD: After you post your reply to PART ONE, scroll up (or down?) and find MY “REPLY for further instructions on how to complete PART TWO.

FOURTH: GO BACK TO YOUR ORIGINAL POST AND REPLY TO IT WITH YOUR PART TWO RESPONSE

So, you will hit “Replyâ€ below and reply to this post as usual for PART ONE. After submitting your reply, you will be able to see my reply in the thread (which will just be more instructions). Read that. Then, you’ll go back to your post and REPLY TO YOUR OWN POST, NOT THE MAIN POST with your response to PART TWO. I promise I’m not trying to make this difficult – let me know if you have any trouble with these instructions, preferably BEFORE YOU POST ANYTHING.

CASE: Imagine you are a physician with a typical, generally healthy 20-year-old patient. She is taking her first college-level genetics course and becomes curious about genetic testing. Just for the sake of curiosity, she asks you to test her for the markers for Huntington’s disease. You ask if she has any family history of the disease and she reveals that she is adopted and has no information on her family health history. You perform the test and discover that, against the base rate odds, she does, in fact, have the markers for Huntington’s disease.

PART ONE:

You now have two options:

A) You tell her that she has the disease.

B) You do not tell her that she has the disease (you lie to her).

TASK 1:

Choose ONE of the options above (A or B) and clearly state which option you’ve chosen.

SUB-TASK 1-1: Briefly, apply a moral theory (utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, etc. (not Natural Law)) to morally justify your decision. Even though your response should be brief, make sure you offer enough discussion about the moral theory so that I can see how it helped you justify telling the truth or lying to your patient.

SUB-TASK 1-2: Using the concepts we’ve learned so far (moral principles and bioethics terms) and your chosen moral theory, give a brief and concise argument for how your decision is best for the patient.

KEEP YOUR ANSWERS BRIEF YET INFORMATIVE HERE AND REMEMBER THAT YOU HAVE TO SUBMIT THIS POST BEFORE RESPONDING TO THE SECOND PART. GIVE YOURSELF TIME TO SUBMIT PART ONE, READ PART TWO, AND RESPOND TO PART TWO.
