Reflecting on a current social movement campaign event or action. *AN EXAMPLE IS ATTACHED*
Examining a **current campaign event or action in Australia (e.g. Australia School Strike 4 Climate)**. As a first step this assignment asks you to provide a plan of how you will go about this task. The plan needs to include a clear summary of
- what the campaign is and who or what organisations are involved in organising it,
- what the event or action will be that you will focus on,
- what sources of information you plan to use and
- any ethical issues you might encounter (such as the need to attend events or interview participants)
First, you must participate in a social movement event/action:
– it can be a media-focused event (such as a radio documentary, art exhibition, release of a report, or social media action) that you conduct primary research on through desk-top research such as online participation, interviews and/or analysis of media coverage.
Discuss the event.
- What do you think it is trying to achieve?
- Who organised it?
- Relate these observations to the material in the course – do the tactics reflect the themes in social movement theory?
- How are we to assess if the event was successful?
This assignment is not primarily about library research. You will need to draw on some reference material, but it is primarily an analysis of new empirical information.
You will need to collect your own data through in-situ observations, gathering media coverage, face-to-face or phone or video interviews or documenting campaign materials and reports.
You will need to describe the campaign you are examining – how did it work? who was involved? what issues were at stake? – and relate the campaign, its aims and its outcomes to some of the ideas we have covered in the course.
In your report or conference presentation you must use the ‘Campaign Analysis Report’ sub-headings (see template provided), which are designed to guide you in presenting your findings in a report rather than essay format.
