Write a 5-6 page critical review of William Pencak, Matthew Dennis, & Simon P. Newman, Riot & Revelry in Early America, highlighting the major themes of the book. You should not try to give a synopsis of each separate chapter, which would be too long to fit into a 5-6 page review, but do concisely summarize the two introductions. Then, in the remainder of the review, highlight major themes that run through many of the chapters. What do these essays teach us collectively about riot, revelry and festive culture in the American colonial era? In the Revolutionary Era? In the early republic? Was revelry the same in all places (e.g., New England, Philadelphia, and the South)? Was it the same for all ethnic groups? Social Classes? Did women and men participate equally in festive culture? Which 2 or perhaps 3 chapters do you think are especially strong? Any that you find to be weaker?
