Ideal Job Satisfaction: Dream Job & The Core Characteristics of the Job Characteristics Model

Think of your dream job. Explain, through the various components of the Job Characteristics Model (see figure 4-3 that I uploaded), why it would provide the highest level of job satisfaction for you personally. There is no right or wrong answer – this is an individual preference. For example, some people want high levels of variety for optimal job satisfaction, whereas others prefer more consistent tasking for optimal job satisfaction. Remember to provide adequate detail for each of the components of the model, as outlined below (be sure to use the letters/headers in your response). Review this part of the chapter prior to answering this discussion so you are touching on the correct issues for each core characteristic.

  1. Task Variety: how many different types of tasks would be ideal for you in your dream job (e.g., does your dream job have you doing different things every day/several times a day–HIGH task variety, or does your dream job have more consistency in your required tasks–LOW task identity) and why is this level of variety important for your personal job satisfaction?
  2. Task Identity: how much identity is important to you in your dream job and why is this level of identity important for your personal job satisfaction? (e.g., creating a chip that helps with the navigational system of an airplane as your dream job means you will never see the entire airplane being put together, but you created the chip that is instrumental in the safe use of the airplane–that is LOW task identity, whereas the people who actually put all the pieces of the airplane together so they see a finished airplane–that is HIGH task identity)
  3. Task Significance: how much impact on other people will your dream job have and why is this level of significance so important to your personal satisfaction?
  4. Autonomy: how much freedom/discretion does your dream job provide you with in regard to how you approach your work and why is this level of autonomy important for your personal job satisfaction?
  5. Feedback: how frequently do you need to know how you are doing, how will your dream job provide that feedback, and why is this important for your personal job satisfaction? Recall from the text that this core characteristic isn’t about PEOPLE telling you how you are doing, but rather about the feedback you get from the job itself (e.g.,, if you are a delivery person, you will know how well you are doing by the number of required deliveries you needed to make that day and how close you are to completing those deliveries … if you are an accountant, you will know how well you are doing based on whether your balance sheets align … so this is feedback that comes from the WORK itself, not other people. Everyone has different levels of feedback need so you are to explain how your job provides this feedback, how often, and why that particular level is important for your satisfaction).
