Your Task: Write about a polar bear
-
You will write a research paper on your species following the guidelines below.
-
Your paper should be between 3-4 pages in length (double spaced, 12-point font, standard margins)
-
You may include a photograph of your species in your paper. Your photograph must include a caption and the source of the photograph must be cited.
-
Your writing must be your own work and not AI-generated.
-
You will be paraphrasing sources that you find online. As such, you must use in-text citations throughout your paper. I recommend that you use the Google Doc built-in citation tool. (Go to TOOLS → CITATIONS).
-
I recommend using APA for your citations, but you may choose whichever format you prefer, as long as you are consistent.
-
You must present a list of your references on the final page of your paper.
Paper Guidelines:
-
Find the scientific name of your species (Genus species). You must use this one place in your paper, but can use the common name the rest of the time.
-
Research and describe your species’s ecological niche; this includes what type of organism it is, appearance, size, its habitat, nutrition, any predators, etc
-
Research and describe the characteristics of your species’ population including growth (or decline), density, fecundity, mortality, distribution and minimum viable size
-
Investigate the probable causes for the species’ population decline. What role, if any, has human population growth played in this decline?
-
Conduct research to learn about conservation efforts to halt the decline of your species; if your species has recovered, describe efforts that have lead to its recovery
-
What are personal actions that someone your age could take to help endangered species such as the one you researched?
