Documentary Film, “Sound and Fury” and Critically Review the Film from a Disability Lens

In your analysis, please respond to the following questions: 

1.     What theoretical framework model do you see in the film? What course constructs do you see? What leads you to believe this?

2.     Who do you think the intended audience(s) for this film?

3.     From a critical disability studies perspective, what is your position on the topic? 

4.     What message(s) about ‘disability’ and people identified as having disability do you think the film presents to audiences watching it? (e.g. consider eugenics)

5.     Do you believe the film transforms, constrains (limits), or entrenches (strengthens) both the representations of people with disabilities and the conditions under which disabled lives are lived? Explain why. (Consider whether the film challenges, erodes, or strengthens existing myths and stereotypical ideas).

6.     Finally, list your key findings of the film and raise at least 3 critical questions that emerged from them. Remember, this is formal academic writing so no bullet point form. 

What to include: 

•   Your first page will include a summary of the film (no more than one page long). You will include the title of the movie and summarize what the film is about. You will outline the topic (what is the controversial issue being raised). This will act as a transition to the analytical part of the essay.
• You will integrate what you learned from the course content and any two of the following course readings: DeafSpace and the principles of universal designl (Edwards & Harold, 2014) and Freeing our people: Updates from the long road to deinstitutionalization (Spagnuolo & Earle, July 4, 2017) in addition to any other course related content applicable (for example, Theorising and Researching Disability from a Social Model Perspective (Barnes and Mercer, 2004)
•   You will critically engage with the literature (e.g., the medical model, social model, human rights, eugenics, ableism, etc.) and offer your critical perspective on the film.
• At the end of your work, you will develop three critical thought provoking questions that emerged from your analysis.
