does not have to be complex

1.     Introduce the topic: do you provide an explicit statement of the question your paper is defending an answer to? Do you give enough information so that someone who is not familiar with the topic could understand what is being asked and your answer to it? One way to be sure that you did is to ask a friend who is unfamiliar with the topic to read it. If after reading they cannot explain what the issue even is, you probably need to work more on this.

Is it done? ____________

2.     Provide a clear thesis: your paper should have a clearly stated and consistently maintained thesis, your proposed answer to the question. Usually, this should be given via a thesis statement in the first few paragraphs (though this is advice, not an ironclad rule).

Is it done? ____________

3.     Provide a core argument that is mapped using MindMup: the conclusion of your argument should be the exact same claim that you provide as your thesis statement. This conclusion should appear clearly at the top of your argument map. That is, I want you to follow what I call the “foundation convention” in mapping, where premises appear as the nodes beneath the claim they support/beneath their conclusion. Papers missing an argument map fail this assignment.

Is it done? ____________

4.     Walk through your map; defend each premise of your core argument: the body of your paper should walk your reader through your map and add further defense for controversial premises. Be explicit—use the premise numbers/names in your maps in the body of your paper—and signpost when you do this (e.g. “I will now defend P2 on the grounds that it best explains X. It best explains X because XYZ.”). Unless your premise is something utterly trivial or non-controversial, each premise should have at least one paragraph dedicated to its defense. Even if it is trivial and non-controversial, you should tell that you think it is in your paper!

Is it done? ____________

5.     Provide at least two peer generated objections to either your thesis or your argument for it: an objection consists of a counterargument that is supposed to show one of your premises is false, that your conclusion is false, that there is no good reason to believe one or more of your premises, etc. Objections to your paper come from your peers.

Is it done? ____________

6.     Respond to each and every objection that you provided in step five: how you do this depends on if you think the objection was correct. If you were convinced by it you should rewrite the paper to reflect your new view and explain the objection that changed your mind about your first draft. If you think the objection is uncogent or unsound you should respond to the objection(s) by providing a counter-counterargument that shows why you think the objection fails. This may involve showing that it rests on a misunderstanding of the claim it is an attempted criticism of, that it has a false premise, is logically invalid, etc.
