Compare and contrast the representations of Native Americans and their relations with European Americans

Choose between the topics below and write a 5-7 page (double spaced) critical essay on the topic that you select. Be sure that the works that you select for this essay are drawn from the literary works that you have been assigned to read this semester.  Do not write about works that we have not read.  Though you may draw from the introductory materials (author biographies) and background readings (Example: “Beginnings to 1820”) these are secondary sources and will not be the primary focus of your literary analysis.  Focus your analysis on the works of American literature that we have read.  You must incorporate research information into your essay by using at least two sources in addition to works from the Norton Anthology.  Be sure that you formulate a solid thesis statement in your essay and that you support the claims of your analysis with evidence from the texts in question by paraphrasing and quoting from your sources. Remember, a piece of literature is an intellectual creation made of words. If you don’t take opportunities to present the words of an author in your essay and to analyze them, you have missed the mark. Your essay must be written in 12-point Times New Roman font and in MLA format (See the “Course Introduction” module), with appropriate documentation. Your works cited page does not count towards your total page count. Avoid dubious and limited web sites like the plague (Examples: Wikipedia, dictionary.com, sparnotes.com, enotes.com, shmoop.com, 123helpme.com, cheatingloser.com, etc.).  Sources like Sparknotes or Cliffsnotes or even Wikipedia are fine to consult for general ideas, but they lack depth, specificity and reliability, so you should only use them to gather ideas that will guide you to better sources.
