For this
discussion board you are required to do some research that goes beyond the
provided resources in this week’s module folder and investigate an incredibly
important topic in criminal investigations – the role of 911 call analysis.
1. Who is
Tracy Harpster? In answering this question, please make sure you tell me
Harpster’s professional background, previous training and experience, and level
of education. Then, describe Harpster’s current contribution to the
investigation of 911 calls.
2. Who is
Susan Adams? Similar to the previous questions, please make sure you tell me
Adams’s professional background, previous training and experience, and level of
education. Then, describe Adams’s current contribution to the
investigation of 911 calls.
3. Discuss the
popular course and material taught by Harpster “When the Caller is the
Killer.” In your discussion include the target audience for this course,
what material is taught, and what, if any research or data is presented by
Harpster.
4. Locate and
discuss a recent criminal court case that involved the utilization of Harpster
and Adams methods (hint: Russ Faria, Jade Benning, Riley Spitler,
Kathy Carpenter may be a few starting points). Discuss the role of Harpster and
Adam’s methods that were utilized and the case outcome.
5. Discuss ONE
of the recent studies that have been published by entities OTHER than Harpster
and Adams about the topic of 911 call analysis (hint: a 2020 article by Miller
and colleagues or a 2022 article by O’Donnell and colleagues may be useful). In
your discussion include a review of the method involved in the study, the data
that was analyzed, and the results/findings. Additionally, describe if
the findings of this study are in alignment with Harpster and Adams research,
or if they contradict Harpster and Adams.
6. Finally,
taking the information you have learned thus far in the application of the Frye
and Daubert standards – take a stance. Do you believe that the techniques
used by Harpster and Adams should be admissible in court?
For this
board, please make sure you cite all of your sources, both in text and at the
conclusion of your post.
Additionally,
please check your post for spelling and grammar errors prior to posting.
As this
discussion board has more questions than previous discussion boards, and also
requires substantial outside research, you are NOT required to respond to any
of your peers posts in order to earn full credit.
