Select an Earthquake that has occurred within the last 2 years with a magnitude of 7 or above (please check to try to select an earthquake has not already been selected by another student – it is ok if this does occur). Please put the name of your quake in the title to your thread. Then, post the following information about the quake:
Title your Post with the Name of the Earthquake and the Magnitude. Then write a short narrative about the quake to include the following information:
1. Where was the epicenter located? – you can describe this geographically and include an image showing the epicenter on a map (see #8).
2. How deep did the actual earthquake occur? (what was the depth to the focus or hypocenter of the earthquake?)
3. What was the magnitude of the earthquake on the Richter Scale?
4. Why did this earthquake occur? (was this earthquake associated with a plate boundary, and if so, what type of plate boundary? If not, what is the likely cause of the earthquake?)
5. What type of stresses (tensional, compressional, or shear) were associated with the rupture that caused this quake?
6. Are earthquakes common to this area? Take a look at the history of this general area further back in time to see if quakes are common or not.
7. What was the extent of the damages and loss of life as a result of the earthquake?
8. Include whatever other detail that will create a solid summary of the quake.
9. Insert an image or map to show the geographic epicenter of the earthquake and also a photo or two of the resulting damage.
