Now that you know your assignment, start thinking about the type of essay you are going to write. The “This I Believe” model for this essay is based on an idea by E. H. Murrow for a radio program that featured closely held beliefs by all kinds of people – old, young, famous, or ordinary people. The essays were short and powerful, and the  “This I Believe” show was popular on public radio stations like National Public Radio (NPR).  In 2013, people came together to create an international organization “This I Believe” to revive the work.  The This I Believe resources provide examples of essays and background on this important ongoing project in which people share what is important to them and how it influenced their life.  

As you listen to some of the examples, think about what you will choose to write about, something that matters to you, and something you know about personally.  Focus on that single belief so that you do not get distracted and wander from your task.
